Biography and Video Answers (scroll down)

Richard Alpert (www.ramdass.org) (born April 6, 1931),
also known as Baba Ram Dass, is a contemporary spiritual
teacher who wrote the 1971 bestseller "Be Here Now".
He is known for his association with Timothy Leary and is
also known for his travels to India and his relationship with
the Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba. Over many decades of
service, he has become a valued spiritual friend and teacher
for a generation of people.

In February 1997, he experienced a stroke which left him with expressive aphasia and partial paralysis. The after effects of the stroke made it necessary for him to change his life and after much work he has been able to resume teaching commitments; using the experience to explore the spiritual dimensions of suffering and the nature of the aging process. He no longer travels and does his work locally (Maui) or via extensive use of electronic media. He continues to teach about the nature of consciousness, and about service as a spiritual path. He is one of the founders of the Legacy of Wisdom project.
